Financial crime detection is a significant challenge in modern financial systems. Traditional rule-based systems produce many false positives, while black-box machine learning models create concerns about transparency and regulatory compliance.

To address these challenges, I developed an Explainable AI-based Financial Crime Detection Engine using machine learning.

The goal was to maximize detection accuracy while ensuring every prediction could be interpreted, audited, and justified.

System Design

The system integrates:

  • Synthetic and realistic transaction data generation
  • Feature engineering for behavioural patterns
  • Supervised learning models (XGBoost, Random Forest, MLP)
  • Model evaluation using ROC-AUC and confusion matrices
  • SHAP-based explainability for decision transparency

Multiple models were benchmarked to balance accuracy, stability, and interpretability, rather than relying on a single algorithm.

Technical Outcomes

The final system achieved:

  • High classification accuracy across transaction categories
  • Strong ROC-AUC performance
  • Robust separation of legitimate and suspicious activity
  • Transparent feature attribution using SHAP

This allowed compliance teams to understand the reasons behind flagged transactions, not just their identification.

Why Explainability Matters

In regulated environments, AI systems must support:

  • Model governance
  • Regulatory audits
  • Risk accountability
  • Human oversight

Embedding explainability into the detection pipeline ensures the system aligns with responsible AI principles and financial compliance standards.

Real-World Relevance

This project shows that AI can be deployed in sensitive financial environments without sacrificing transparency. It demonstrates that performance and accountability can coexist.

This project reinforced the importance of designing AI systems that are both powerful and ethically trustworthy.
